Get On Board - Your Guide to Community Car Services in Suffolk
Who can use community car services?
Anyone, young or old, with or without a disability may ask to make certain journeys for which no private car or suitable public transport is available.
What type of journeys are eligible?
- Local shopping and personal business.
- Visiting relatives or friends at home.
- To link with nearest public transport service.
- Local visits to the doctor, dentist or optician.
Journeys for work, school, day care and hospital or clinic appointments where other transport is available are not usually undertaken.
Who provides the cars?
Volunteers who are paid a mileage allowance, provide and drive their own cars on a non- profit making basis. Suffolk County Council equips many community transport providers with wheelchair accessible cars. These operate through a scheme called “Wheels within Wheels”. The service uses cars that seat up to 5 passengers or 3 plus a passenger travelling in a wheelchair.
These accessible vehicles are still driven by volunteers.
Who pays?
Passengers contribute on a mileage basis details of which are available from operators. Journeys all receive a partial subsidy from Suffolk County Council to assist in keeping prices down.
How do I arrange a journey?
Contact your area operator using the phone number shown below. Some offices are open for limited hours but a message can be left and the operator will get back to you as soon as possible.
Can we always help?
We want to help out with all reasonable travel requests and will do our best to help you, but our ability to do this will depend on availability of volunteer drivers and the numbers of requests that we receive. Giving us plenty of advanced notice of your needs will help.
If in doubt, give us a ring and ask if we can help. We will be taking care not to undertake journeys which could reasonably be made by other transport.
Are more volunteer drivers needed?
We have a pool of drivers but always need more to share the load and link drivers to passengers in their locality to reduce mileage costs. Please contact us to find out what is involved. Training is provided and a mileage allowance is paid.
